Washington State Historical Society Wins National Award

In late May, the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) announced that the WSHS received an Award of Excellence for its exhibition Unlocking McNeil’s Past: The Prison, the Place, the People. The prestigious award recognized the exhibition for its deep dive into the history of McNeil Island, which operated as a prison between 1875 and 2011, at which time it was the last prison in the United States to be accessible only by air and water. The exhibition was on view at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma from Jan. 26 to May 26, 2019.
