Taste of Tacoma in Point Defiance Park, also known as the “Ultimate Summer Get Together,” has never missed a summer since 1986. But the three-day festival of food, live music, and more than 200 vendors will be canceled this summer following the state government restrictions on large group gatherings. While businesses are starting to reopen at this time, Taste of Tacoma recognized that redesigning the layout and implementing safety restrictions would not be practical for this summer.
The festival involves a lot of hard work from Taste of Tacoma and support from the sponsors like Emerald Queen Casino, BECU, Olympic Eagle Distributing, Heritage Distilling Co, Xfinity, and the community members who enjoy the festival. The event requires months of planning in advance, including securing sponsors and media partners, finding food and craft vendors, chefs, craft breweries, wineries and more than 90 entertainment acts, as well as building the infrastructure across Point Defiance Park.
Taste of Tacoma received “Best Of” awards on multiple occasions and also was awarded the Green Events Excellence Seal of Approval in 2019. The Green Event Program recognizes Tacoma events who put in extensive efforts to have a more sustainable impact on the environment through the event by encouraging walking, biking, donating excess food, and using recycled materials.
Taste of Tacoma will be missed by many this summer; however, the celebration will surely be cherished more by attendees when it returns in the years to come.
