Residents of Tacoma like to think they’re sitting on the best kept secret of Washington — “don’t tell too many people how wonderful it is to live in Tacoma.” But jig is up, which is why it’s not surprising Tacoma made its way on Sunset magazine’s list of “20 Game Changing Places to Live.”
For more than a decade, the city has been revitalizing the area’s historic buildings, renovating the waterfront, adding six major museums, and is luring a bevy of creative minds. In 2016, a “new wave of makers” led to a designation as an Etsy Maker City. In 2017, Made in Tacoma launched to support local artists, and there are plenty of opportunities to flex your creative and physical muscles with metal-smithing, woodworking, and 3-D printing.
It was these things, plus the wave of trendy eateries, mostly-affordable housing, outdoor escapes, and blue-collar vibe that makes Tacoma a gem — and dare we say a fierce rival to Seattle and the Bellevue.
