Skate Your Summer Away

As we switch seasons to summer, we reminisce about the activities we enjoyed in winter. Hot summer days leave us wishing for colder weather and the activities that come with it, like skiing, sledding, and skating. However, there are summer alternatives to our favorite winter pastimes. One activity we can enjoy all year long is skating. Forget the ice: We’re talking about roller skating.

It may seem like you’re looking for places to take the kids to occupy their summer day; however, many skating rinks offer fun opportunities for adults. Pattison’s West skating center, located off Pacific Highway in Federal Way, includes skating events strictly for adults every week. Every Wednesday and Sunday evening, they have Rhythm Night, which includes guest DJs. They also host a Sip N’ Skate on the first Saturday of every month, with beer and wine available.

Across the Puyallup River, Skate Tiffany’s displays an assortment of entertainment options. After you’ve skated around the rink, enjoy a slice from their new pizzeria or a round of mini golf. It also offers corporate events to create a one-of-a-kind office party or 21-plus birthday parties. Auburn Skate, located on Howard Road, offers a little twist on adult skate nights — dance skate to organ music on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

If Tacoma is your stomping ground, check out the revamped Skateworld, which was formerly known as Rollin’ 253 and underwent a name change with its new owners in April. The venue offers public skate sessions, birthday parties, and private lessons. If you’re looking for time to yourself and a way to keep the kids busy this summer, enroll them in a skate camp from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

So, this summer, strap on your roller skates and take on a new adventure with your friends; turn it into a date night, or drop the kids off and gain some time for yourself.

Whatever it is, roller skating is your new escape.
