With the weather getting warmer, it’s the perfect time to venture to Tumwater for some hot cars on display at the Flaming Pig BBQ Rides & Rods Car Show. It will be held every third Thursday, starting April 15 and going until Aug. 19, from 5-7 p.m.
With gathering restrictions lifting across the state, the outdoor venue makes for an easy socially distanced excuse to travel through yesteryear for some 1950s-style fun.
Located in the Old Town Plaza Shopping Center, guests can enjoy this free, family-friendly activity and check out souped-up, classic, and restored rides that include cars, trucks, and motorcycles.
Grab a bite from one of many local eateries nearby like Infernos, Meconis, Niko Teriyaki, and Flaming Pig BBQ. Taildragger Coffee will be open late as well.
Plans are in the works for some fun hands-on activities for children.
The event is organized by Mike and Sadie Hill, owners of Flaming Pig BBQ food truck. They recently opened an eat-in location in Tumwater. The event is a testament to the family’s enthusiasm for fast cars, car shows, and Mike’s car racing days in California.
In 2013, the couple launched JR Motorsports. With Mike racing for four seasons throughout Central California and his home track in Bakersfield, it was here that he won two track championships in the Hobby Stock Division.
He would go on to win championships in the Dirt Track at Kern County Raceway Park, two open show wins at the 2015 Santa Maria Nationals, and the 2017 Budweiser Nationals. By the end of their final season in 2017, JR Motorsports owned several cars.
“Anyone who has visited our restaurant would quickly see that horsepower is something we dig,” Sadie said, who is originally from Tumwater. “The décor on the walls in our storefront includes some of the actual race car paneling from Mike’s championship car.”
These days, he has a sweet 1959 Chevy Apache truck, restored to all its glory, that he will be displaying at Rides & Rods.
“This is something our family has always enjoyed,” Sadie said. “Kids today are impressed by iPads and Teslas, which certainly have their place in technology, but they don’t get to see the cars of yesterday and the cool sounds. We wanted to create an opportunity for families to come out and see them.”
Stop by the Old Town Plaza Shopping Center in Tumwater now through summer for this free, outdoor event the whole family will enjoy.
