I’ve heard it a hundred times. “Northwesterners are afraid to wear color.” While we’re guilty of some fashion faux pas, I don’t agree that we’re afraid of color. In fact, I think the opposite. When the sun is out and the sky is a vibrant blue and the grass is glowing green, people want to put on something colorful – Something that illuminates under the sunshine, something that’s comfortable and something that’s dynamic. For our Spring 2014 shoot I wanted to tackle colorful fashion in the Northwest head on. Are we afraid of color? No.
I wanted the shoot to be shamelessly all about embracing colorful clothes. I wanted it to fly off the pages and light up rooms. I didn’t want a speck of white to frame our models, I wanted color on color and I wanted it as big and bold as possible. Our photographer Brook Clark at Studio B Portraits in Issaquah made my vision a reality with her phenomenal talent. Our friends at Sorella Salon & Spa did the beautiful hair and makeup. And my styling assistant Jill Sanford helped with everything along the way. TCM models Lauren H. and Mary H. were the perfect pair and both are fabulous editorial models. The video above is by our intern extraordinaire Haley Huntington.
So, let’s cheers to spring and all the color it sprouts. At the very least, I hope this shoot inspires you to question that black dress you always seem to gravitate to. Color is a powerful thing. – Lauren Foster, assistant editor.
