Let Them Eat Cake

It’s there when you say, “I Do.” And when you’re blowing out birthday candles. It’s adorned in pink and blue to welcome new babies. Slices are served to commemorate promotions, anniversaries and when people are gathered to say goodbye. If you think about it, there is probably not a food in the world that is present at more pivotal life events than cake.

For Odette D’Aniello and Mary Ann Quitugua, who own and operate Cebrity Cake Studio in Tacoma, cake is a part of their daily lives and they wouldn’t want it any other way. The sisters have been in business for 13 years but their cake roots spread all the way back to their childhood days growing up in Guam, where their parents ran a bakery.

“We moved to Washington in 1998 and started Celebrity Bakery in Lacey in 1999 with our brother, Roland, and Odette’s husband, Dave, and our cousin, Wally,” Quitugua said. “We were in that location for five years before we purchased The Cake Studio in Tacoma’s Freighthouse Square. After about a year, we completely moved our shop to Tacoma and closed our Lacey location. We also changed our business name to Celebrity Cake Studio.” The family recently moved to a new Tacoma location down the street from Freighthouse Square on East 26th Street. They specialize in everyday cakes, elaborate wedding cakes, cupcakes and other sweet treats. They also serve coffee. Their most popular cake is pink champagne cake with white chocolate mousse filling. Quitugua’s favorite is the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.

They love their careers. Most of their customers are cheerful and fun to work with. After all, they are coming to their shop to buy cake!

“I love that we can be creative every day and that I can work with my family in a business we love,” Quitugua said. “I also love our many regular clients are like family to me and just make my day brighter.”
