A New Book About Lakewood

Legendary Locals, and imprint of Arcadia Publishing, is helping make local history a fun read with their long list of books that cover the history of South Sound towns through words and photos. The most recent book in the Legendary Locals series, “Legendary Locals of Lakewood” went on sale this week.

The Lakewood book is written by Steve Dunkelberger, a local journalist with more than 15 years under his belt. He’s started his career at the Lakewood Journal. Neary also worked at the Lakewood Journal and also served on the Lakewood City Council. He’s the communications director at Comcast.

Although Lakewood became an official city in 1996, it is an area rich with history that includes British farms and the first US military base in the state. Lakewood was also home to Linda Evans, the actress who played Krystle Carrington in the T.V. drama “Dynasty” and her new-age musician boyfriend Yanni. They owned a $1.7 million home in Lakewood’s Madera neighborhood as well as Ivan the Gorilla who spent many controversial years at the B&I on South Tacoma Way. Lakewood is also home to Lakewold Gardens – learn more about the couple who left that legacy and more in this fascinating book that also contains 200 black-and-white photographs.

You can buy the book at bookstores or here for $21.99. Check out Arcadia for a list of other books focused on the Puget Sound, including Downtown Tacoma, Ferries, Vanishing Seattle, Auburn, the Puyallup Valley, Sumner and more.
