We all know the Seattle sports teams — the Seahawks, Mariners, and the Sounders — but there are a ton of other teams, professional and semi-professional, that play right here in our backyard, including Reign FC, the famed National Women’s Soccer League that recently relocated to Tacoma. Tacoma Defiance, formerly Seattle Sounders FC 2, is based in Tacoma and is the reserve team of Seattle Sounders FC. The move from Seattle to Tacoma was a combined effort put forth by the owners of the Tacoma Rainiers and Seattle Sounders FC, who expressed interest in hosting a USL championship at Cheney Stadium as early as 2013. In 2017, it was announced that the Sounders’ reserve team was relocating to Tacoma. In March 2018, they played their first game at Cheney Stadium to a completely sold-out crowd. March through October
Founded by Bill and Teresa Predmore in 2012 as Seattle Reign FC, this women’s soccer team was one of eight inaugural members of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and now plays in Tacoma. The team garnered a lot of fame when members Megan Rapinoe and Allie Long played on the U.S. team for the 2019 World Cup, bringing home the win against the Netherlands. Reign FC the was NWSL championship runner-up two years in a row in 2015-16 and won the NWSL Shield award for best regular season record those same years. They share Cheney Stadium with Tacoma Defiance and the Tacoma Rainiers. April through October
The Tacoma Stars are a professional indoor soccer organization that fields teams in both the Major Arena Soccer League and the National Premier Soccer League. The Stars were founded in 2003 and are named after the Tacoma Stars team that played in the original Major Indoor Soccer League from 1983-92. They play at the ShoWare Center arena in Kent. The Tacoma Rainiers are a beloved minor league baseball team of the Pacific Coast League (PCL), and the Triple-A affiliate to the Seattle Mariners. They are based in and play their home games at Cheney Stadium. The Rainiers have won the PCL championship more than any other team in their
league, with a record total of five titles.

The Seattle Thunderbirds are a major junior ice hockey team based in Kent. They are a part of the Western Hockey League and play their home games at the ShoWare Center arena. The team was founded in 1971 as the Vancouver Nats of the Western Canadian Hockey League but moved to Seattle in 1977 as the Seattle Breakers and rebranded as the Thunderbirds in 1984. The Oly Rollers from Olympia and Dockyard Derby Dames from Tacoma are some serious South Sound women’s roller derby teams. In fact, the Dockyard Derby Dames are so big, they have three home teams. And the Oly Rollers from Olympia win a lot.
