Journey To Mt. Rainier On A Gondola

We don’t know about you, but it always seems like it’s going to be a better day when the mountain is out — of course by this we mean Mt. Rainier.

Seeing that massive mountain on the horizon has become such a sight, in fact, that someone created the Twitter account @IsMtRainierOut featuring daily photographic evidence and a simple “yes” or “no” response. Likewise, a southern Puget Sound guerilla marketing campaign known as South Sound Proud launched recently by a group of Tacoma business leaders who have put the motto “Live like the mountain is out” on billboards, stickers, sidewalks, sunglasses, and anything else that can bare a logo.

Bottom line is, after the long gray winter we’ve weathered, we deserve a little one-on-one time with breathtaking views. The good news is that Crystal Mountain Resort is opening for its summer season on Friday, June 23 with daily operations through Sept. 17.

Located less than two hours south east of Bellevue, the resort offers a plethora of summer activities including horseback riding, disc golf, yoga, and more than 10 miles of pristine mountain trails for hiking. But of course we all know the best part of summer at the resort is the unbelievable views of Mt. Rainier that can only be accessed by foot or the Mt. Rainier Gondola.

This summer, the gondola will operate Sunday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with extended hours on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Additionally, The Summit House, Washington’s highest elevation restaurant, can be accessed by the gondola, offering diners a stunning view of the surrounding mountains. The restaurant will be open for lunch Sunday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Tickets for the gondola can be purchased upon arrival and range in price from $12 for children ages 4 to 12, and $23 for adults. For more information and current conditions on the mountain, visit Crystal Mountain online.
