Happiness Comes in a Waffle Cone

With so many changes happening daily, what is constant and unwavering in all its sweet deliciousness? Ice cream! It’s pure happiness in a waffle cone, or a cup, or a shake, or however you take it. It’s there reminding us that it’s summertime, and summer is meant to laugh, and smile, and share ice cream with family and friends. There are plenty of pick-up windows, take-out options, and outdoor settings in the South Sound area that still allow this to happen while remaining at a safe distance of others.

Gabe’s Ice Cream, located in Puyallup, offers old-fashioned, homemade ice cream.

“When we say homemade, we actually mean it. Everything is made from scratch without dyes, additives, or preservatives as possible. We spend hours making it in an old school oak barrel churn that was handmade by an Amish man in Pennsylvania. The only thing that is not handmade is the motor that powers it,” says owner, Todd Moore.

This one-of-the-kind ice cream shop also makes heavenly milkshakes, Italian sodas, pastries, and coffee. Open from 4-9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Friday through Sunday, 1-9 p.m.

Bliss Small Batch Creamery in University Place uses all-natural ingredients to create unique ice cream flavors like customer favorites: cookie monster and honey lavender, just to name a few. Customers are being served this season from its customized sidewalk counter at the Village at Chambers Bay with lots of outdoor space to social distance and enjoy your ice cream in the adjoining Market Square. The made-in-house frozen happiness can be enjoyed in cones, shakes, ice cream sandwiches, or in a take-home whole carton. Try a MovieStar Milkshake, shakes with toppings, cake, and cookies. If you’re lucky, you may run into the vintage ice cream trailer, or one of the many carts out and about this summer! Open daily from 3-8 p.m.

Hawleys Gelato Fudge Coffee, family-owned and operated, offers two Olympia locations for authentic Italian Gelato and dairy-free Sorbettos. You can’t go wrong with 24 flavors to choose from at the Capitol Mall location, and 18 at the downtown Olympia store, including customer favorites like salted caramel, pistachio, spumoni, and cookies & cream. Try the August specialty flavor, peanut butter cup. Enjoy endless milkshake flavors such as chocolate coconut, strawberry cheesecake, or raspberry lemon pie. Don’t miss fresh, in-house made fudge, as well as the many delectable coffee and espresso drinks offered there. Downtown store opens daily 3-8 p.m., closed Wednesdays. Capital Mall store open Monday-Saturday 11-7 p.m., Sunday, 12-6 p.m.

Sweetreats by Harbor Cakes, located outside of the Harbor General Store in downtown Gig Harbor, is a local favorite. The adorable vintage cart serves up not only Bliss Small Batch Ice Cream, but delicious treats handcrafted by Harbor Cakes.

“Some customer favorites include our Famous Cinnamon Roll Cake with a scoop of Honey Vanilla Ice Cream on top. We also have little takeout boxes of cake crumbles and frosting, hand-scooped waffle cones, organic cotton candy, and cakesicles,” says owner Katie Wright.

Stop by for kid favorites like ice cream with worms and dirt (all edible, of course), or a cotton candy nest, three mini scoops of ice cream in a bowl (nest) made of cotton candy. Open Monday-Friday, 11-7 p.m., 11-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Ice Cream Social, always a Tacoma favorite, offers two locations, the first on 6th Avenue, and the second at Point Ruston. Although lobbies are closed, there’s still plenty of ice cream to be scooped daily between 12-9 p.m. and taken to-go or eaten outdoors nearby. As its rotating menu changes, choose from a variety of handmade, all-natural flavors like almond poppyseed, spicy chocolate, roasted banana, or cherry lime sorbet, when available. Check Facebook to see what flavors are being served up today! Open 12-9 p.m. daily.

The Berry Dock Ice Cream Shop, located on the corner of Union and Rainier Streets in Steilacoom, is right next to the Anderson Island ferry dock where cars line up. A perfect time to walk-up to its outdoor serving window for hand-dipped waffle cones or waffle bowls full of scrumptious Olympic Mountain, Tillamook, or Bliss Small Batch Ice Cream while you wait. There is plenty of space to sit in its outdoor patio area under a shady umbrella. Other offerings include slushies, smoothies, milkshakes, baked goods, and coffee. Open 11-8 p.m. on weekdays, 11-9 p.m. on weekends, and closed Wednesdays.
