If setting out for a round of golf late at night and under the cover of darkness doesn’t sound like your idea of fun, then you probably haven’t tried Glow Golf at Meadow Park Golf Course in Tacoma.
Now in its second year, this summer event invites avid and novice golfers to tee up between 10 p.m. and midnight through August for a 90-minute, nine-hole experience unlike any other. It is an experience both fun and challenging.
“You can’t really see your club face,” said Sam Wells, who participated in a Glow Golf event earlier this year. “You are kind of trusting your game in that you are going to be able to hit the ball.”
The magic that makes this Glow Golf experience possible lies within a battery-powered golf ball fitted with light-emitting diodes, and that can be turned on or off by shining a light at a tiny hole on the ball. Even in pitch darkness and at great distances, the ball is well lit and conspicuous.
“I could see the ball on the green from 200 yards out,” said Brandon Arenas, an avid golfer who went to the Glow Golf event twice last year. “It is surprisingly easy to find your ball.”
The light trail from the traveling golf ball when you hit it makes for an intriguing visual. The extra components add a slight weight to the ball, but do not affect the golfing experience. In fact, the ball flies like a range ball, according to Meadow Park Golf Course Manager Chris Goodman.
Although the darkness presents an obstacle, it also creates a relaxed atmosphere. There is no pressure to hit every shot perfectly, and you are more likely to remember the good shots rather than the bad ones.
“It’s more of a ‘glass is half full’ experience,” Goodman explained.
He also noted Glow Golf is one of the ways that operators of the 104-year-old golf course engage the community, with proceeds supporting programs such as Junior Golf and the Special Olympics program, as well as course improvements.
A round of Glow Golf costs $40 per person. The ticket also gets you a bucket of balls to warm up at the driving range, a pair of drink tickets at the bar, and a glow necklace. At the end of the evening, the glowing golf ball is yours to keep.
