Girls Only Prom to Benefit Sexual Assault Survivors

Want to have a fun, safe dance party with your girlfriends while benefiting a good cause? Well, get ready. Girls Only Prom is happening from 7-11 p.m., April 28 at Tacoma STAR Center. Tickets are $50 and all proceeds go to the Sexual Assault Center for Pierce County. Tacoma’s M Agency is an event partner.

Event creator Lisa Blackmore is a wedding photographer, and she got her inspiration while on the job. She noticed at the weddings she shot, that the people on the dance floors having the most fun were always the bride and the other women in attendance. The bride, her bridesmaids, her mom, and her aunts were all getting down and having fun. And when, other than weddings, do adult women get together and dance anymore? Blackmore wanted to create a safe and welcoming environment for women to dance with each other without worry.

Blackmore was also inspired by the #MeToo movement to help support sexual assault survivors. The Girls Only Prom values are: inclusiveness, celebration, sisterhood, and the power of women getting together.

Girls Only Prom will have a “bad-ass” female DJ, DJ Mixtress, who will only be spinning tunes that are respectful to women.

“The prom is going to be a dream come true!” Blackmore promises.
