Get Your Local Java Fix

Coffee. It’s a Pacific Northwest staple. Nothing beats a hot cup of joe when it’s the middle of the rainy season (most of the year, really). Check out a few South Sound favorites.

Burial Grounds

406 Washington St. S.E., Olympia
Order a Brenda’s Brains (chocolate, peanut butter, caramel, and shots) or a Living Death (butter pecan, caramel, shots) or go all out with the caffeine and grab a morning Black Eye (espresso and chocolate in a drip coffee). If you’re not in a rush, join studying Evergreen students, grab one of the comic books off the rack, and reconnect with your inner goth.

The Frog n’ Kiwi

3609 Market Place W., University Place
The Frog n’ Kiwi serves everything from locally roasted coffee (Olympia’s Batdorf and Bronson) to pastries to gelato. The coffee shop is connected to the UPlay Town Center. Part of University Place’s Town Center, the coffee shop is located inside the main building near the library. Check out a new book, grab a cup of coffee, and sit by the fire at the Town Center. Or take the little ones to UPlay and make it a family day.

Batdorf and Bronson

516 S. Capitol Way, Olympia
An Olympia favorite since 1988, Batdorf and Bronson is one of the O.G.s of Pacific Northwest coffeehouse culture, starting out as the Dancing Goats Coffee Bar. The company roasts coffee beans to serve all around the South Sound and across the country (it has two outpost locations in Georgia). Stop by the flagship store on Capitol Way.

Cutters Point

5500 Olympic Drive, Gig Harbor
Since 2001, Cutters Point has served locally roasted coffee to Gig Harbor and greater Tacoma. The flagship store of the coffee chain in Gig Harbor recently got a makeover. The shop has its own roasting facility and brews and sells wholesale coffee as well as in-house coffee. There are several locations around the South Sound.

Ravensara Espresso and Bakery

11818 SR 302, Gig Harbor
The Key Peninsula has a hidden gem in Ravensara, a drive-thru coffee shop and bakery. Ravensara has been serving coffee to drivers since 1999. Connected to the drive-thru is 3 Clouds Bakery, which serves up house-made pastries, soup, and bread.
