The recently opened Norse & Sea offers unique gifts that nod to both the nautical and its owner’s Norwegian heritage.
Its Steilacoom location mimics the Eastern Fjords of Norway, where owner and entrepreneur Jessica Dahlstrom Scotti’s ancestors came from.
“It’s one of the things that inspired me to pursue this,” Scotti said. “It’s such a special town — the oldest in Washington,”
The small boutique features an abundance of Norwegian- and Scandinavian-inspired goods, whimsical toys, assiduously crafted jewelry pieces, seafaring imbibed adornments, clothing, one-of-a-kind trinkets, and other treasures.
Norse & Sea features Danish brands like Maileg and Plus-Plus as well as a variety of other specialty brands, all of which complement each other’s quality and charm.
“I knew there was a big Scandinavian population here, but I didn’t know how big until I opened and really started connecting with the locals,” Scotti said. “I’ve gotten such a warm welcome from the community.”
Scotti, both a realtor with Sotheby’s Marketplace International and owner at Manifestaging staging company, speaks the love-language of gift-giving. She wanted to bring that passion alive by offering a space for rare personal items that make gift-giving, and receiving, special.
Of opening during a pandemic, the Portland native said, “If it’s coming from a place of passion, purpose, and community, the universe will always provide. The key to having a passion for anything is that there is no ‘right time.’ The most important thing that it comes down to for me is the connection with people.”
Situated next to the post office, Scotti can’t help but feel a connection to her late, former-postman father: a lot of local traffic makes its way into the store from there.
“The community has welcomed us overwhelmingly, with open arms and so much gratitude,” said Scotti, who is already envisioning spring and summer with new lines coming in along with the blooming flowers of the farmers’ market.
