25 Years of Teen Creativity

Pierce County recently celebrated 25 years of highlighting local young artists by showcasing the winners of the Pierce County Library System’s Our Own Expressions Teen Writing and Art Contest. Out of more than 700 poetry, short-story, drawing, and photo entries, 36 won prizes. The winners — ranging in grade from 7th to high-school seniors — came from schools across Pierce County. Job Program Launches for Homeless Youth

In an effort to combat youth homelessness, Junior Achievement of Washington has joined forces with YouthCare to create a job readiness program. Programs will center around high school completion, financial literacy, college preparation, and job training. The pilot program, training an estimated 90 people—will launch later this summer in the greater Seattle area with opportunities to work for the Seattle Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena. A Strawberry Fest

The Vashon Strawberry Festival returns this year with live music performances, food, and fun-filled family activities in full swing. The festivities begin Friday, July 16, and span the whole weekend. Performers include Saint Ophelia, Gregg Curry, Tres Huevos, and many more. The festival — including community-led activities along with Vashon Chamber of Commerce-sponsored events — is aiming to be zero waste. Learn more about the music lineup and events here

The Tacoma Night Market is Back

Tacoma Night Market returned last weekend with a bang. The Tacoma Pride Block Party marked over a year since the beloved city night market. The market typically features local craftspeople and makers along with artists, tasty treats, and music. Saturday, July 10, celebrated both the LGBTQ+ community and the return of nightlife in grit city.
