Comfort Food and a Family Atmosphere at Dusty’s Hideaway

McKinley Hill in Tacoma is the spot Dana and Dave Verellen chose for their eclectic, family-friendly eatery, appealing to diners on a comfort-food quest. They’ve taken over a bungalow, filling it with desert-themed memorabilia to create a relaxed atmosphere.

Pull up a chair, and it feels like you’ve landed in Grandma’s kitchen, with a funky, welcoming vibe. Guests can grab drinks in the tchotchke-filled bar, staffed with servers known for their easygoing, attentive attitude. And on every parent’s wish list is snagging a table in the fenced-in back-yard, with comfy seating by the fire pit and a grassy play area with toys for restless kids in need of a seventh-inning stretch.

Every menu item offers a unique twist of unexpected flavors, like nachos served not on a bed of the usual tortilla chips, but atop crispy tater tots, loaded with cheese and tangy chopped pickles (sounds a little weird, but you’ll be licking your fingers when it’s gone). Save room for dessert — Dusty’s Key Lime Pie is the real deal, with a subtle, tangy finish achieved only by using true key limes.
