Roller derby is pretty much an ideal sport for the Pacific Northwest. It’s a little quirky, held indoors and offers the opportunity for all participants to show off a bit of their personal style. To encourage kids to try out the growing sport, Auburn Skate Connection is offering a 10-week roller derby camp this summer. The camp, open to boys and girls of all ages and abilities, will meet on Wednesday nights and experienced coaches will teach participants derby basics to prepare them for the leagues that often run during the fall. Such basics include how to skate on “quad” skates (as opposed to inline or Rollerblade skates, the rules of roller derby, and how to succeed at the unique sport. The camp will enlist “special guest” coaches for each week, who will share their extensive experience and success with campers. The ultimate goal of the camp is to teach campers confidence, skating proficiency, and love for this fun sport. The 10-day camp is $65, or $7 to drop-in on individual days.
