If you’ve ever shopped online for furniture or stood in a hollow, unfurnished apartment unsure about how to proceed, you might understand where Nevin Shetty was in 2013.
The CEO and co-founder of Seattle-based Blueprint Registry was finding it hard to reconcile the stock photographs he was seeing while shopping for furniture and home goods online with the layout and design of his new apartment.
“He came up with the idea of shopping through visual blueprints, finding it would be a useful tool to search and discover new products,” said Lizzy Ellingson, chief creative officer and co-founder. “Once the idea had legs (in April 2013), he brought me on board and we decided to test the concept within the wedding registry market.”
After a modest first year, the e-commerce platform had brought in $200,000 in gross sales, but caught its stride in 2016 when it brought in $6.5 million and continues an upward trajectory with hopes of doubling that figure in 2017 with the help of several partnerships, including one with Target.
Prospective couples can choose from featured products by retailers like Crate and Barrel, Athropologie, and West Elm or they can import an already existing registry from places like Target, Amazon, and Pottery Barn. What’s more is that couples can register for a honeymoon fund or cash to help supplement post-nuptials expenses if their home is already well-stocked.
When the wedding is over, couples will receive a detailed gift summery that makes returns, exchanges, and thank you card writing ridiculously simple. Moreover, newlyweds will enjoy a 10 percent completion discount to purchase any items from their list that weren’t gifted to them and which they just can’t live without.
While Blueprint is only for couples at the moment, Ellingson said they hope to expand their platform’s scope to include other life events like baby registries, dorm registries, and general wish lists by the end of summer 2017.
